As a graduate of New York City public schools and an alumni of a Career and Technical Education program that has transformed my own life, it is truly a dream realized, to be able to pay it forward and serve as the Founding Principal for the Brooklyn STEAM Center.
At the Brooklyn STEAM Center, students will have access to a world class 21st century Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that has been co-designed by leading industry experts and nested within a business environment. Our scholars will have access to one of five pathways that lead to multiple industry credentials/licenses, articulated college credits, and a variety of middle skill career opportunities available both on and off the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Our school also leverages the social-capital available on our 300-acre 400+ business property, and provides students with a variety of work-place exposure activities that allows them to thrive in a world where it’s “not just about what you know, but who you know as well.”
Our faculty, industry partners and staff take great pride in offering children a high level of Career Technical Education that will prepare them for future success. At STEAM, we ensure that every graduate of our program is College and Career Ready! We do this through the use of a rigorous standards-based Career Technical Education curriculum that offers hands-on learning opportunities at every turn. Students that come to the STEAM Center can expect to be academically challenged through our curriculum and through the leadership opportunities in their respective Career Technology Student Organizations (CTSOs) like SkillsUSA. Our center encompasses several programs that are industry-certified and nationally recognized. These accolades have not gone unnoticed, as we’ve also formed many collaborative partnerships with employers and college partners that will lead to middle skills career opportunities after graduation, a jump start on an affiliated college pathway, or a combination of learn and earn; which in most cases are at a higher rate of pay than the average high school graduate.
Students and families can expect a safe, nurturing, hands-on learning environment here at STEAM, and a strong emphasis on academic achievement, through our strong partnerships with our sending schools. We are appreciative that families and partner schools entrust us with the opportunity to educate the young people in our communities, and we take that responsibility very seriously!
